The World Health Organisation (WHO) has lauded Bhutan's progress in maintaining health records of patients after the introduction of the electronic Patient Information System, ePIS, last year. This has helped in identifying how non-communicable diseases are increasingly becoming common among elderly citizens in the country. To encourage and strengthen the use of such systems in South-East Asia, the WHO is hosting a four-day regional workshop, which started yesterday in Paro.

Coinciding with the International Olympic Day, the Bhutan Olympic Committee launched the Sports Science Initiative in Phuentshogling today. The initiative will be piloted in Phuentshogling Thromde and will then be taken to other districts in the future. It is to nurture a strong sporting culture in the country and develop future athletes. His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck graced the ceremony.

The USD 1bn fundraise launched during the two-day Sustainable Finance for Tiger Landscapes Conference in Paro yesterday will ensure a sustainable source of funds to preserve the tigers. The fund which will be raised within 10 years from now will be independent from the current grant-based fund for tiger conservation. The fund is expected to benefit the 13 tiger-based countries including Bhutan.

More than 4,500 farmers have transformed their kitchen gardens into nutrient-rich spaces in Chukha, Dagana, Haa, Samtse, and Sarpang. This is one of the outcomes of the Food Security and Agriculture Productivity Project, which was carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in partnership with the Department of Agriculture in 2022. This was shared during a two-day experience-sharing workshop between the Community Resource Persons and relevant stakeholders that concluded today in Paro.

A book titled “The Teaching of Buddha”, translated from English to Dzongkha was released today. The Tshugla Lopen of the Central Monastic Body and the Minister of Home Affairs launched the book in the capital. This is the seventh revised edition of the book in Dzongkha. The book, translated and edited by Khenpo Choten Dorji, covers Buddha’s life story and teachings using simple language and metaphors. BDK, the Society for the Promotion of Buddhism in Japan donated 10,000 copies which will be distributed to monastic institutions, schools, public libraries, and across the tourism sector in the country.
