A recent study conducted by a Drungtsho or a traditional medicine doctor at the National Traditional Medicine Hospital has found that eczema, locally known as Langshu can be effectively treated using a combination of herbal purgation and application of herbal medicine pastes. The research is a part of the first Bhutan Sorig Journal launched by the Faculty of Traditional Medicine at the first National Sorig Conference. The health minister launched the journal today.

Eco-lodges are proving to be a promising business in various districts in the country. Inspired by visits to these existing eco-lodges, a group of villagers at Norbugang Gewog in Pema Gatshel are in the process of starting an eco-lodge near the Gongri river. The initiative aims to help the villagers generate income and promote tourism.

After eight years of construction and encountering multiple delays, the two 120-bed hostels at Samdrup Jongkhar’s Garpawoong Middle Secondary School are finally complete. Originally scheduled for completion in 2017, the Nu 32 M project encountered numerous obstacles, including a court battle between the district administration and a contractor. The District Education Office and the school management are planning to open the hostel for students after the mid-term break.

The health ministry plans to conduct a nationwide screening for hypertension in the coming fiscal year. According to the ministry, the prevalence rate of hypertension increased to 30 per cent last year from 28 per cent in 2019. Despite the increasing prevalence, the Ministry of Health says, about 65 per cent of the population with hypertension are unaware that they have the health condition. Observing the World Hypertension Day at Thimphu today, the ministry says, this calls for early screening and timely intervention.
