The number of people availing Immigration Medical Examination or IME service for Australian visas has drastically dropped at the Gelephu Central Regional Referral Hospital. The hospital started providing the service to people applying for Australian visas in February, last year, to help reduce the pressure on the national referral hospital. The hospital says the decline could be because of the decreasing trend of people leaving for Australia.

A livelihood programme for communities living within the white-bellied heron landscape in the country has trained more than 50 individuals so far. The programme began this year. It raises awareness among the communities on the significance of the white-bellied heron. Moreover, people are trained in marketing and packaging local produce to acknowledge and compensate them for their efforts to conserve the critically endangered bird. The training for the second batch of representatives will end tomorrow at Paro.

For over a decade, the National Referral Hospital in Thimphu has been struggling with a bed shortage. The hospital management attributes this to a rise in elderly patients with chronic diseases needing longer treatment. However, the officials are looking forward to solving the problem when mother and child-related services are moved to Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital later this month.
